Happiness in a Nutshell - Photos and Realities

Ah, it's a month already since my very last post !

"Raf, what kind of activities are you  working for?"
Hmmmmm, Basically, I'm still doing several projects as Tunza Ambassador, Youth for Climate Agent (YFCA) founder, and People 's Consultative Assembly (MPA) of Bumi Ganesha. Besides, having several workshops as Grant Winner of PMW, and last but not least, doing my Thesis! Yeah, basically, I need to create my own reports on Tunza, conceptualizing the Fundraising for Alumni Meeting, and Organizing YFCA's event. Yet, I was being Project Leader of Earth Day 2016, and etc. Sometimes, I will have "me time" such as Gaming and Dancing (literally) hoho!

Enough with Intermezzo!

Tonight is the night, I will write about Happiness. Such a simply word that's stuck between Time and Space, expectation and reality, hope and dream, ying and yang (what the ....). Even though it's that simple, lots of people keep struggling to achieve it, sometimes, they think they have achieved it, but they're not satisfied ...... yet.

And then, asking them a simple question
"Are you sure? Have you been happy, yet?"
You know what, suddenly, I was asking myself
"Wait, what's happiness? How to define it? How to measure it? Is it even measurable?"
Basically, there's no certain answer though. But then, here comes the answer from Holy Quran
"Which favors of your Lord you would deny?" (QS. Ar-Rahman)
This phrase repeated 31 times, which makes me interested more!
.
.
.
.
.
Goddamnit, How could I not be grateful enough? I was often thinking what I didn't get instead of what I have; Thinking what I have failed rather than what I've done; Cursing my sickness without seeing its positivity (How close I am with my Lord since last time I was sick); you name it! Lots of things that's just happened in my Life should make me Grateful. THIS is what makes you reach your Happiness.

Happiness in a nutshell? Really? What just happened through your life, even if it's a failure, can be your Happiness. At least, in the future, you won't do same mistakes, right?

Well well, organizing your files especially photos, can bring a flash and throwback of my Life. These, can be my Happiness definition. These would stay in my memories, for the entire of my life. Lots of things had happened, and THESE what I should be grateful for :)

Youth for Climate Agent - Children Farming and Crayon Campaign

Hello guys!

Here's my new report about "Children Farming and Crayon Campaign".
It's based on my report on Tunza, you may check it here: http://tunza.eco-generation.org/ambassadorReportView.jsp?viewID=37883&searchType=&searchName=&pageNumber=1

Why should I post it here? Well, there are a limit on Tunza, I can't even post lots of cute photos of these Children which is not good! So yeah, thanks to Blogger thought!

This event held by Youth for Climate Agent (YFCA), one of Green Living Education and Climate Change pioneers platform, collaboration between The Climate Reality Project (TCRP) Participant, Kartika Anjarsari, Regional Ambassador of Tunza Eco-generation, which is me, and several members from Meteorology Students Association (HMME) ITB. Why should we make this Platform? Well, all of us have same Dream, to make a better future for our Earth?s environment, concern with Climate Change and shifting behavior education, and having similar Projects also. Then, Why don't we create it? Beside, it's great opportunity for having Tunza and TCRP names, right?

Climate Agent itself came from our Goals, we want to build our societies awareness, instead of changing our behavior by ourselves. So, every volunteer and participant that's being involved with our Projects, would be encouraged to be Climate Agent, changing their Behaviors and also being reminder to their surroundings.

So, here is our first project, "Children Farming and Crayon Campaign", held on 24 February 2016. Collaborate with Sekolah Bermain Balon Hijau or Green Balloons Playgroup, we taught children to grow some food, especially vegetable. We told them that it's not easy to grow their foods, even it's taking almost a month to grow a vegetable, and the farmers itself need to watering the plant every day. So, say no to wasting food! After planting a vegetable, we encourage their mother to remind their children, and we tend to see the result from the participant for the next 1 month :)

The next thing we've done, we do some Crayon Campaign. It's written "Selamatkan Bumi Kita" or "Save our Earth". Although, lots of children seeing this Draw as a "Sad Ice cream", we explained to them that "This is Earth, Earth is Sad right now, to make him smile, you need to change yourself instead! Do not wasting food, littering garbage, etc". And once again, we encouraged the mothers to remind their children for having good habits.

Basically, this event engaged 12 Volunteers, 8 Teachers, 20 Children and Mothers. Encouraging not only participants but also our Followers on Instagram and Facebook :)

Thanks for reading my Report, guys! Hopefully you?re doing well and be inspired and empowered!

One does not Simply, being Commuters in Jakarta - Internship based Report!

Hello everyone! Today we will discuss about "How bad Air Pollution in Jakarta" and how's struggle the commuters working with it. This based on my Report on Tunza Eco-Generation!

You may check it here: http://tunza.eco-generation.org/ambassadorReportView.jsp?viewID=37805&searchType=title&searchName=Jakarta&pageNumber=1

Basically, it came from my experiences, doing Internship on Ministry of Environment and Forestry Republic of Indonesia in Jakarta. So, as you know, I live on Bandung, having more fresh-air, mountain atmosphere-alike, still enjoy my "Walking" trip on Bandung, etc. When I came to Jakarta ....... Well, I must said, it's quite stressing, because the mean temperature itself around 31-34oC, stuck on Traffic Jam, and the Air-pollution was depressing also. It's gonna complete the suffering of commuters.

Here's several photos about the condition on Jakarta
(source: bbc.co.uk)

As commuters, public transportation would be your very best-friend and the quick escape from these exhausting environments. Although, you would be facing another challenges, struggling to get in the commuter line, and fighting for standing in this situations

(source: tempo.co)
Being commuters in Jakarta is very challenging event through your Life, but it's the beautiful thing, you can be more grateful to live in your hometown, and you will realize how strong you are, when you can live in here.

The Air-pollution itself, keep increasing and being worst every time. It's all because the growth of Vehicles volume on Jakarta every year. It contributes for 70-80% of Air-pollution in Jakarta. Imagine, there are 16 millions vehicles on the streets, creating Traffic Jam which makes the effect getting worst and worst. These pollution can give Health-problem due to the exposure of the Major Air pollution such as SO2, NOx, CO, O3, Pb, and PM10.

“The risks from air pollution are now far greater than previously thought or understood, particularly for heart disease and strokes,” Maria Neira, director of WHO’s public health department, said in the statement. “Few risks have a greater impact on global health today than air pollution; the evidence signals the need for concerted action to clean up the air we all breathe.” (beritasatu.com)

Solution

1. Shifting transportation from private to public transportation
Just like my previous report, you can check why: http://bit.ly/21AKgjS No traffic jam, reducing your carbon footprint, and of course, FRESH AIR!

2. Improving Air-pollution monitoring
It's really important for the societies to know the air-quality level in risky time. At least they can prepare their own mask so that they can reduce the risks of getting more exposure from these Major pollution

3. More Car Free Day (?)
Beside clearing the air, CFD can be a place to socialize and increasing the Happiness Index for your societies. You can meet thousands of people having their own interests, hobbies, communities, and etc. It can be a place to develop your networking instead of doing your routine.

Ah, here comes the last statement, guys. One does not Simply, being Commuters in Jakarta, having lots of challenging, the Air-pollution, dense populated, very hot temperature a.k.a Urban Heat Island, traffic jams, lots of things happen in Jakarta! But, I believe, if you find a problem, there must be ways to address this kind of issues. Talking about Air-pollution isn't only environmentalist or scientist responsible, it's ours!

Thank you for your attention, guys :)) Please share your thought below!
Good Day!

Muhammad Rafi Al-Hariri Nasution
16th Regional Ambassador of Tunza Eco-Generation - Indonesia

For The Next Six Month! - Tunza Eco-generation Ambassador Stories, BEGINS!

Rejected by thousands, accepted by One. Of course it's worthy enough!

Ah, first, I want to thank Tunza Eco-generation, as one of Environmental Networking Platform for Children and Youth by Samsung Engineering and UNEP, that has given me a great Opportunity for being 16th Regional Ambassador of Eco-generation. At last, after being several month as "Freedom-writer", reporting Indonesian Environment condition, discussing about anything necessary, reading world and ambassadors report, and etc.

Imagine, in the morning, you just woke up, you're doing your "Morning" Ritual, check your own ritual to assure is there any chance or opportunity you'll get ...... Beside, you've known that you already being rejected on several opportunity such as SEAMEO Youth Forum, Climate Reality, UNAOC 7th Global Forum, and ..... you didn't go to Harvard Project for Asian and International Relation (HPAIRx) even though it's your own choice huhu. BUT, that's okey! Everything's worth to try lah. So, it's nothing to lose! And when you got something, the Happiness is True! No sleepy, just smiley, and "AH, Thanks GOD! I'll try my best!"
.
.
.
.
.
Ah, for the next six month yaps. So, being ambassador isn't about being "The Chosen One", but we need to fulfill our duty, giving one mandatory report from Tunza, and one report from my activities. Everything has been set and planned. Mostly, I will corporate with Kartika Anjarsari, one of Climate Reality Leadership Corps candidate, one of Youth for Climate Change member, and Volunteering on Sekolah Bermain Balon Hijau (SBBH). She's literally activist, right? Haha.

Here's my planned activities:

By March 2016, I will write about Climate Policy class activities. Climate Policy is one of the most favorite subject on Institut Teknologi Bandung. Every semester, the students would be seperated for 10-16 groups and every group would be given an assignment such as Campaigning about Green Energy, Waste, Forestry, etc, Inviting eco-leader speakers, Interviewing environmental NGOs and NPOs based, and etc. Creating the report about it would be great to spread unique activities from multidisciplinary group to mitigate climate change.

By April 2016, I will write about “Climate class session” on elementary schools and “Green Education” on Sekolah Belajar Balon Hijau (SBBH), one of non-profit pre-school, that’s held by Youth for Climate Change (YFCC) Bandung Chapter.

By May 2016, I will write about the result from Focus Group Discussion (FGD) about climate change and its solution that’s held on Meteorology Students Association ITB.

By June 2016, I will write about Disaster Creative Mapping and Education sustainability and its future plans to build Climate Change Resilience for local societies on urban areas.

By July 2016, I will write about “GHG Emissions Reduction Potential on Energy and Transportation Sectors Micro-scale on Bandung City” based on my own research for my Thesis.

By August 2016, I will write about "Climate Change Real-Impacts on Indonesia" based on real-time observation

Beside doing these thing, I've committed my self to help Kartika for doing another eco-project such as: Climate Class for Elementary School, Tumbler and Lunch Boxes Day, Reusable Bags Campaign, and etc.

Ah, for the next six month, it would be Busy day though. Many things should be done beside working with my Thesis.

Anyway, here's my final words for all of the Readers,
"You don't need to take Social Majors for talking about societies, you don't need to take Environmental Engineering to be environmentalist, you don't need to study Disaster Risk Reduction for decreasing your societies vulnerability, as long as you passionate with it, you want to give your time and thought, genuinely work with it, then you're worth enough to take those Responsibilities!" - Rafi, 2016
Thank you for your attention, please check this website each month due to my Report that would be posted on Tunza and this blog! Ganbatte

Sincerely,
Rafi

Is it Possible to address Blackouts Issue on North Sumatra?

Hello guys! Once again, I want to tell you my thought about addressing one issue ...... Rolling Blackouts over North Sumatra, Indonesia.

One of the biggest province on Indonesia, called North Sumatra, having almost 13 Millions people that live here. Everyday, North sumatra's resident will have "Rolling Blackouts" for 4 hours for each region. Believe me, I have felt that since childhood, because my hometown is on this province. What makes this Blackouts happen? Well, based on (Tempo.co, 2014) North Sumatra's power plants have the ability to generate 1,376 MW of electricity. The province, however, has a peak load that reaches 1,655 MW, resulting in a deficit of 279 MW of electricity. These Blackouts have made suffered and anger to every citizen, even it would make quite loss due to additional expenditure for turning-on private Generator.

The question is simple, "Is there any solution for this?"

Here's the thing, of course it can, if only, everyone can commit themselves to change the way they live.

1. North Sumatra has 1,428,479 household with certificate, if every household has 5 bulbs on their home, with the average of bulbs are 20 watt, then, we will have 142 MW worth to save each hour. By turning-off these bulbs everyday for 12 hours on the daylight.

2. Mostly people on Indonesia, will turning-on "Rice-cooker" every single time, to warm their cooked-rice. It takes 350 watts to use it. Whereas, if only we use it just for Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, make it "accordance" to your portion. Then you won't need to keep the remain rice warm, isn't it?

How much will we save? Let's see that 50% household already has rice-cooker. Then, we will have 250 MW worth to save, EACH HOUR.

3. What's about Dispenser? Almost everyone has it too! And you know what? Dispenser needs 350 watt worth of electric. And believe me, every household will turning-on this, every time. Whereas, if only we use it for our needs such as make tea for Breakfast or coffee for latenight, it's only take 10 minutes to make the water's hot.

Let's say that 50% household have it, CONGRATZ, we have 250 MW worth to save.

Beside it's gonna be "Solution" for Blackouts, of course it's gonna save your own "Money" for paying your own Electric, reduce GHG emissions, and it's gonna affect your life like you never seen before. NO Blackouts, NO Debts for paying Electric, and SAVE The Earth from Global warming.

See? Once again you see how #SmallActMatters can save us to address your Life issue, right? Please share and help me to spread this to the world :) It's applicable for every Region :)

Do you guys have same issue?

PS. it's still an approximation, it could be BIGGER or SMALLER. But, I prefer to say, it's BIGGER because, the Household itself came from Household that has 'Certified Building', which means we haven't calculated the Newcommer, people who live on Boarding house, or still contract or rent a house. Yet, I estimated it with 50% household has dispenser and rice-cooker, whereas, it could be more, though!

Anyway, my thesis itself about these estimation to reduce GHG emissions by changing the way we live. Thank you guys and help me to share this idea :)

What If, Everyone Changes Their Transportation?

Hello guys!

So, I want to share my thought about "What if everyone changes their Transportation". It refers to Everyone's walking, uses bike, bus, trains, or any public Transportation. The impacts would be breathtaking because it's gonna change the way we live!

1. Goodbye Traffic jam!

Indonesia, one of country that has "worst" traffic jam in the world. Here's the examples : If you go to your office on 05.00 a.m. you can arrive on 06.00 a.m. But if you go to your office on 05.30 a.m. you will arrive on 08.00 a.m. Believe me, Indonesia's traffic jam is stressing your mind, and of course, it could make great loss for its economy growth due to lack of productivity. Just because ....... Dense population, everyone uses their private transportation, every car just take 1-2 persons, every motorcycle just take 1 person, and yes, what you'll get is this!

But, calm down! if we change it TOGETHER, not only me, but you, and them, everyone's aware with it. GOODBYE TRAFFIC JAM! Here's why :

Source : http://www.citymetric.com/

See? It's gonna change your traffic like you've never seen before :))
Let's do #SmallActMatters because it's worthy if we do it Together!

2. Goodbye Global warming!

Okey, let's calculating the Emissions. Imagine that everyday, more than thousands people would go on same direction. Okey, let's take 50 as example and those 50 person should take 10km distance. If 50 people use their own private car, and currently car will emit 237.5 gCO2 each km, then we will emit 118.75 kgCO2 everyday. What if, those 50 person take bus? they will just emit 2.7 kgCO2 everyday. It's not even 3% of its emit. And yes, this will save us from Global warming though!

3. Clean Air

Ah, of course by changing your transportation, it will make our Air quality cleaner! And it will make others be comfortable to walk or cycling, it will make the atmosphere cooler! Domino's effect, isn't it?

4. Goodbye Urban Heat Island!

Well, beside the building, anthropogenic has great role to make Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon. It's the condition where Urban's temperature much higher than the rural, mostly, you can feel it on Indonesia's cities such as Jakarta, Bekasi, Depok, Tangerang, Medan, Surabaya, and etc. It's because our dense population and ..... the transportation itself. It can make depressed. If we change our transportation, there would be no Air pollution (that's being UHI Trigger) and make the environment cooler. So yeah, goodbye UHI!

See? So many things can happen to use while we're changing something, even it's just a little thing! Because #SmallActMatters when we do it TOGETHER! Let's do #ActOnClimate, guys!
